Garrison bridge closes March 15 for $4.4 million replacement project
All KY 8 traffic detoured until November
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (March 10, 2017) – Contractors will close the Lewis County community of Garrison’s 87-year-old KY 8 bridge this week to begin its $4.4 million replacement.
The bridge will close Wednesday morning, March 15, so crews can prepare the structure for demolition. New bridge construction, including concrete piers and other work, will start this spring. Installation of steel beams and pouring the bridge’s concrete surface are slated for summer and fall. The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic by November 15, with a final project completion date of April 30, 2018.
During construction, KY 8 traffic will be detoured using KY 1306 and KY 3311 nearby. The detour will be marked.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awarded a low-bid, $4,395,340.88 contract to Bush and Burchett Inc. for the project.
The old 400-foot, riveted steel truss bridge, which carries an average of 3,000 vehicles a day on KY 8 across Kinniconnick Creek near its confluence with the Ohio River in Lewis County, was built in 1930 and has reached the end of its life span.
The bridge has suffered corrosion and impact damage, and its narrow lanes and low clearance are inadequate for today’s traffic. Its advanced age and construction style also limits repairs or retrofits, which necessitated the replacement project.
Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
