Nearly every 40 minutes, someone in the United States dies in an alcohol-impaired traffic crash according to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  That is why the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, along with other highway safety, community health and law enforcement officials are reminding everyone this Fourth of July that Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving and to designate a sober driver before the celebrations begin.

Last year in Kentucky during the 4th of July Holiday period -

  • There were a total of nine traffic related fatalities.
  •

  • Roughly half of those killed during this time last year involved a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher.
  •

  • Of the 826 total fatalities in Kentucky last year, 178 were due to alcohol. Seventeen of these alcohol releated deaths involved a motorcyclist
  •

Whether you’ve had way too many or just one too many, it’s not worth the risk.  Impaired driving has serious consequences: death, disfigurement, disability and injury.

  • Driving with a BAC of .08 or higher is illegal in every state. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report over 1.4 million people were arrested for driving under the influence during 2006. Dispite this information, still too many people ignore the law
  •

  • Driving impaired or riding with someone who is impaired is not worth the risk. The consequences are serious and real. Not only do you risk killing yourself or someone else, but the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired are not the way you want to celebrate the July 4th holiday.
  •

  • People that break the law often face jail time, the loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates, and dozens of other expenses (i.e. attorney fees, other fines and court costs, car towing and repairs, lost time at work, etc).
  •

Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin, so you can enjoy the next celebration

  • Before drinking,  please designate a sober driver and give that person your keys
  •

  • If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely
  • Use your community’s Sober Rides program
  •

  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact your local law enforcement
  •

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety would like to remind and stress to everyone that impaired is simply not worth the risk. The consequences are serious and real. Not only do you risk killing yourself or someone else, but the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired can be significant. Violators often face jail time, the loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates, and dozens of other unanticipated expenses.

It’s obvious to recognize someone who’s had way too much to drink to drive safely.  What about those who have had just one too many?  You don’t have to be ‘falling down drunk’ to be a threat to yourself and others on the road.

Don’t let this Fourth of July blow up in your face. Remember, Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving. Designate your sober driver before the parties begin.
