                                                  Design Engineers

FROM:                                     John B. Sacksteder, P.E.
                                                  Director, Division of Highway Design

DATE:                                      January 6, 1998

SUBJECT:                               Design Exceptions for Vertical Clearance on Interstates

Effective immediately, it will be necessary to coordinate all design exceptions for vertical clearances on the interstate with the Military Traffic Management Command Transportation Engineering Agency. A clearance of 4.9 meters over the entire roadway width, including the useable width of shoulders, will be required on all rural interstate routes. The 4.9 meter clearance will also be required for the urban interstate routes identified on the attached maps. 4.3 meter clearance will be required on other urban interstates not designated on the maps.

When it is identified that a design exception for vertical clearance is necessary, the Project Manager shall submit a preliminary folder with discussion of the need for the exception to the Director, Division of Bridge Design. This Division will be responsible for coordination with the Military Traffic Management Command Transportation Engineering Agency. The folder should be submitted as early as possible in the design to assure the agency concurrence and to avoid potential later delays.

Correspondence from FHWA regarding this direction is attached for reference.
