TO:                                           Chief District Engineers
                                                  Active Consultants
                                                  Design Engineers

FROM:                                     John B. Sacksteder, P.E.
                                                  Director, Division of Highway Design

DATE:                                      February 24, 1998

SUBJECT:                               Roadway Special Notes, Special Provisions, and General Notes

This memorandum voids and supersedes Design Memorandum No. 2-97 and supplements thereto.

Attached to this memorandum are (1) a current listing of special notes used in roadway plans and the warrants for their use, (2) a current listing of the special provisions and the warrants for their use, and (3) all roadway plan standard notes in the same format as previously issued with the warrants for their use.

These documents are to be used as in the past. This office will update all roadway plans in our office and your office is responsible for updating all plans in your office. Your office will be required to identify the intended general notes needed by code number. Current special provisions are also on the computer and will be handled in the same previously described manner.

You are to continue supplementing your plans with other types of plan notes not covered such as traffic notes, utility notes, phase construction notes, etc. We have the option of including the special notes on the plans or in the proposal. We recommend if they are a series of short concise notes, they should be identified as plan notes, whereas if they are long descriptive notes they should be identified as proposal notes.

Please address any questions to this office.
