Road closure scheduled for tree removal project in
Bur Oak tree to be extricated on KY 1977 (Spurr Road)
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 18, 2014) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways, announces that a temporary road closure will be in effect for Spurr Road in Fayette County. The closure is necessary for a tree removal project to be completed.
Work schedule and location:
- Friday, February 21 - KY 1977 (Spurr Road) will be closed from approximately 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The location for the closure will be mile point 5.644.
The Bur Oak tree has been evaluated by a certified arborist. The assessment revealed that the tree growth has been declining for the past ten years. The tree is a historic landmark tree and approximately 300 years old. In addition, the tree removal project is a safety preventative measure.
The District 7 Highway Office plans to provide cross-sections of the 67 inch diameter tree to local agencies. The agencies will utilize the sections of tree for educational purposes. This is contingent on segments of the tree remaining in stable condition for transport after the removal process.
Suggested alternate routes for motorists:
- From the east – Greendale to Leestown to Yarnallton to Spurr Road
- From the west – Yarnallton to Leestown to Greendale to Spurr Road
