Bridge replacement work to begin on US 42 over Beargrass Creek
Louisville, KY (July 3, 2014) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has awarded a contract for replacement of the bridge on US 42 over Beargrass Creek in Jefferson County. The $1.05 million project will replace the bridge superstructure which includes the beams, deck and concrete rails. This bridge is located in the Butchertown area (see map below).
This bridge was built in the 1920’s and the original limestone abutments and wing walls underneath are in good condition. These items will be left in place to support the new bridge.
The limestone approach walls adjacent to the bridge will also be left in place. The new concrete bridge rails are being designed to blend with the historic approach walls. The sidewalks across the bridge will also be replaced.
Any limestone curbing removed from the project will be donated to Louisville Metro government for reuse in the city as they deem appropriate.
US 42 will be reduced from three lanes to one in this one-way area where East Main Street becomes Mellwood Avenue (mile point 0.2). Lane closures are scheduled to begin on Monday, July 7 and the speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph in the work zone.
American Contracting & Services Inc. of Jeffersonville, Indiana was awarded this contract with construction scheduled for completion in October 2014.
