Interstate 65 lane closure on the John F. Kennedy Bridge
Louisville, KY (March 11, 2013) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 Office advises motorists of a lane closure on northbound Interstate 65 on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge. KYTC bridge inspectors will be climbing the Kennedy Bridge this week to take a closer look at items documented in a detailed inspection of the bridge last fall.
The work will include a review of a possible crack in the steel on one of the upper chords. The steel section at issue carries very little load of the bridge. If engineers determine that a crack has in fact formed, they will drill a small hole in the steel to stop it from extending to load bearing members of the truss.
“The Kennedy Bridge is safe for travel and it is our intent to keep it that way,” stated Mike Hancock, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary. “But the bridge is 50 years old and requires a good deal of maintenance, often resulting in disruption of traffic.”
The right lane of northbound I-65 will be closed across the Kennedy Bridge on Wednesday, March 13, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. EDT.
The starting date and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
