Buckle Up Signs for Schools

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 12 to 20 year olds in America. Even though regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people in a crash, teens are less likely than any other age group to buckle up. As a reminder, Drive Smart places signs encouraging seat belt usage at the exit of the schools, hoping to remind not only students, but parents and faculty as well to buckle up as they leave the parking lot. Signs will be made     to have the school’s initials as well as the school’s colors.

Transportation Safety Program

Sweet 16 Birthday Party
This is a low key event in which teens learn about their new responsibilities when they get a learner’s permit and driver’s license, and how they can stay safe and keep others safe at the same time. The content that will be covered during the event are seatbelt usage, impaired driving, distracted driving, and the fact that teens have a much higher fatality rate than many others in  our society. A presentation will be given along with video viewing.

Mature Drivers
This is a program designed for older adults (60 years and older) to stress the importance of as one gets older the mind and body react differently to situations, such as driving.

Impaired Driving Programs

Ghost Out.JPGGhost Out
The Grim Reaper removes selected students from the classroom. Each student represents a victim of an alcohol and drug related crash. The students write their obituary and a memorial service is held for the student body where each victim is laid to rest and their obituary is read.

Judgment Day
The goal of Judgment Day is to discourage teens from driving under the influence. By creating a mock trial, the program shows what really happens to an underage DUI offender in the courtroom using local attorneys, judges and other court officials, as well as a jury of their peers.

Mock Crash

Mock Crash 1.JPGmock crash 2.JPG
A student assembly is held to show what happens in an alcohol and drug related crash.     Makeup is applied to volunteer students to simulate crash victims before placing them                in wrecked vehicles. As the assembly begins, local and state law enforcement, fire and emergency staff arrive on the scene to perform rescue efforts. Victims may be arrested,      treated for injuries, or pronounced dead.

fatal vision goggles.JPGFatal Vision Goggles
Fatal Vision Goggles are a specially designed and manufactured pair of goggles that simulate visual impairment caused by drugs or alcohol. A wearer's normal perceptions are distorted by the goggles, similar to the effects of intoxication. The goggles are intended to convince both the wearer and those observing that alcohol impairment makes activities with known risks, such as driving vehicles, very dangerous and life-threatening.

The D2 (Distracted Driving) Simulator accurately mimics and displays the handling characteristics of real vehicles to educate the public on safe driving habits including impaired driving, seat belt usage, distracted driving and speeding.  Special software offers 39 specialized lessons with over 200 driving scenarios and exercises.

3D Simulator.JPG3-D (Drunk and Drugged Driving) Simulator
The 3-D (Drunk & Drugged Driving) Simulator is a battery powered car which is driven through a winding course set up with traffic cones, by an operator wearing Fatal Vision goggles. This simulates operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This program is typically presented at high schools. To participate in the program, students must have a valid driver's license and a signed permission form from a parent or guardian if under the age of 18.

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY PROGRAMS

Free Check-Up Events
Nationally certified child passenger safety technicians inspect child restraints for correct installation and educate parents on proper usage. Drive Smart also offers technician training classes and educational presentations throughout the year.

Buckle That Child Hotline (1-888-235-8KID)
Motorist may anonymously call the hotline to report the Kentucky license plate of a moving vehicle with an unrestrained child. If possible, provide the color, make, and county.                     An educational packet with safety restraint tips and usage are mailed to the registered owner     of the vehicle. No records are kept of these calls.

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for children nationwide. In 2008, 19 children age 15 and under were killed on Kentucky roadways. Eleven of those were unrestrained.
Kentucky’s Misuse Rate is over 95%. That is 3 to 4 errors per seat in Kentucky.
